How To Find a Competent Criminal Attorney

How To Find a Competent Criminal Attorney?

By Caitlina Fuller

If you have been accused of committing a crime you need to make sure that you get the representation that you need in the court. When you have been accused of a crime or arrested you will quickly find that there is a lot that you do not know about the legal system.

With a criminal attorney by your side you will also know your rights. You may be worried about how much a criminal attorney will cost you. If you are going to hire a private attorney you will usually find that you will need to give them a retainer, which is a fee to get them started on your case. The retainer may be as little as $500 or as much as $3,000 and much of this is dependent upon not only the lawyer and their personal preference, but also the charges that you are facing.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, you can usually have a public defender appointed to your case. If you feel as though you are being accused of a crime you should always stop talking and ask for a lawyer.

If you have been accused of a crime and you need legal help you need to hire a criminal attorney as soon as possible. The sooner you have a lawyer on the case the sooner you will know your rights, you will be able to devise a defense plan, and you will also have the support that you need.

When you hire a lawyer you will find that they need money up front to get started. This can be a little disconcerting when you are in a legal bind and you just need help, but you need to remember that the lawyer is not only the help that you need, but they also are running a business. The money that they ask for is for their services. Most lawyers will allow you to make payments as you go, making your defense affordable.

Criminal attorney will usually expect a fee upfront. This fee can range from as little as a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand. When your criminal attorney comes on the case they will usually instruct you not to make any statements to law enforcement without them present. Together you will create a defense plan based on what you have to say, your knowledge of the facts, and the lawyer's knowledge of the law and how the prosecution can use it against you.

Hiring a criminal attorney is an important part of defending yourself when you have been accused of a crime. Without a lawyer you could be doing yourself a great disservice, even if you know that you are not guilty of the crime you are accused of.

Have you been arrested for a crime and released on bail? Your next step should be thinking about how you will defend yourself against the charges and a great way to do this is with the help of a good criminal attorney. The best way to find a defense attorney is to ask people that you know.

Of course, the way that most people get an attorney is to open the phone book and just start dialing. Legal help is expensive, so it makes sense to shop around and make sure that you will be able to afford your defense. You will find that fees vary wildly from lawyer to lawyer.

When shopping around you should not only ask about the retainer fee, which is the fee that you pay just to retain the services of the lawyer, but also ask them about their hourly rate. A lawyer who charges $350.00 an hour is going to burn through your retainer fee much more quickly than a lawyer who has the same education and experience and charges $225.00 an hour.

As you can see, you may need to do a little bit of shopping around when contacting criminal lawyers. Also look for a lawyer that is willing to make payment arrangements with you, which will allow you to keep up with payments without going completely broke in the mean time.
